Day 3: Catching Our Breath in Varkala (Where the Cliffs Meet the Sea)

VARKALA BEACH Swapping the quiet backwaters for dramatic red cliffs, spiritual shores, and hands down the best sunset views in Kerala. If you’ve been following along with our Kerala itinerary, you know we’ve seen some incredible landscapes so far. But rolling into Varkala feels like stepping onto a completely different planet.Unlike the flat, palm-fringed beaches you usually picture when you think of southern India, Varkala is famous for its massive, striking red cliffs that drop straight down into the roaring Arabian Sea. (Geologists actually call this the “Varkala Formation,” but to us, it just looked like a postcard).

Day 2: From the Mountains to the Mirror Waters of Alleppey

Kerala food The alarm clock buzzing in the pre-dawn darkness is usually a nuisance, but today, it signaled the start of a highly anticipated getaway. Leaving the familiar hustle behind, my wife and I grabbed our packed bags and made our way to the terminal. Our journey began with an early morning flight from Delhi to Kochi. Watching the sun rise above the clouds from our window seats, the excitement of trading the busy northern plains for the lush, tropical tranquility of “God’s Own Country” finally started to set in. Stepping out of the Kochi airport, the shift in the atmosphere was immediate—warm, breezy, and carrying the faint, earthy scent of the coast. Navigating transport in a new state can sometimes be stressful, but our arrival was completely seamless. Upon landing, we were greeted by our private AC sedan, which made the scenic drive from the airport to Munnar incredibly comfortable. As we left the coastal city limits and began our four-hour ascent into the Western Ghats, the scenery transformed dramatically outside our windows. The urban landscape faded into winding mountain roads lined with dense, emerald forests, sprawling rubber plantations, and our very first glimpses of those famous, seemingly endless rolling tea gardens. The air grew noticeably cooler and crisper with every mile we climbed, signaling that we had truly arrived in the hill country.    The drive itself was an immersive experience, but finally reaching our destination felt even better. After checking into our hotel and freshening up, we headed out for our first stop at the breathtaking Valara Waterfalls. Tucked away right along the highway and surrounded by thick, vibrant green jungle, this magnificent multi-tiered cascade was a spectacular introduction to Munnar’s raw natural beauty. We stood at the viewpoint just absorbing the scenery, feeling the cool, refreshing mist spraying against our faces and listening to the thunderous roar of the water crashing down the rocky slopes. It was the absolute perfect remedy for our lingering travel fatigue. As the sun began to set and the crisp mountain temperature dropped further, we realized we had built up quite an appetite. We wanted to fully immerse ourselves in the local culture, specifically seeking out the rich, plant-based culinary heritage the region is famous for. We ended our first day perfectly by diving into an authentic, traditional Kerala meal—the flavors were absolutely incredible! Served on a freshly cut, vibrant green banana leaf, our pure vegetarian feast was a masterpiece of balance and spice. We savored every dish, from the comforting, coconut-milk-infused vegetable stew and the perfectly spiced dry cabbage thoran, to the tangy, tamarind-rich sambar poured over steaming hot rice. Finishing the meal with a warm, sweet payasam, every single bite felt like a welcoming embrace from the state, wrapping up the very first day of our romantic adventure on the highest possible note.
